Description
This program is designed for participants to experience the rhythmical magic of the cajón (box drum) and become acquainted with its fascinating history. Participants will learn to play the most popular rhythms of Afro-Peruvian music using the cajón as well as other typical percussion instruments of Afro-Peruvian music, like the quijada (jawbone) and the cajita (little collection box). Participants will also learn to sing traditional songs from the Afro-Peruvian repertoire, which reveals so much about this unique culture. Finally, through this immersive experience, participants will also become aware of how the cajón is an instrument with deep roots in the African Diaspora, not just in Peru but in other countries of the Americas, like Cuba, Puerto Rico, and even the United States.
